We repair the Microsoft Surface Book (1st Gen) at our workshop in Bermondsey, from cracked screens and worn batteries to board faults and data recovery. The Microsoft Surface Book is a 2015 2-in-1 laptop with a 13.5-inch screen, identified by model numbers 1703, 1704, 1705. The SSD can be replaced but the memory is soldered, so storage is the only upgrade.

What we repair on the Microsoft Surface Book
Touchscreen replacement
Glass, touch layer and display are one bonded 13.5-inch part. We replace it as a unit and test touch and pen input before it leaves.

Charging port and power repair
Charging faults are traced to the adapter, the Surface Connect port or the charging circuit. The port is a separate part on most models.
SSD and storage upgrade
The Microsoft Surface Book takes an M.2 SSD. We clone the existing drive to a larger one so Windows, programs and files carry over unchanged.

Memory
Memory in the Microsoft Surface Book is soldered and cannot be upgraded. It is worth knowing this before paying anyone for a memory upgrade.
Windows repair and reinstall
This model does not meet Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements, and Windows 10 reached end of support in October 2025. We can advise on the realistic options, including a lightweight Linux or ChromeOS Flex installation.
Battery replacement
The battery is glued in behind the display. Replacing it means opening the device, which we explain and price before starting. At this age, short runtime and sudden shutdowns usually point to a worn battery and not a board fault.

We also carry out keyboard and trackpad repair, motherboard repair, liquid damage repair, overheating and fan repair, hinge and casing repair, virus removal on the Microsoft Surface Book, along with USB, HDMI and audio port repair, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth card replacement, webcam and speaker faults, BIOS password removal with proof of ownership and data transfer to a new machine.
What we see on the bench
- The SSD is in the screen section, behind the glued display.
- Faults with the detach mechanism are common and are not always a hardware failure.
- The Surface Book has a battery in the screen section and another in the base, and either can swell.
Data recovery from the Microsoft Surface Book
The SSD in the Microsoft Surface Book can be removed and imaged on our own equipment, so files can usually be recovered even when the machine will not start.
Estimate the cost with our data recovery calculator, or read about recovering files after a ransomware attack.
Where the Microsoft Surface Book sits in the range
Its nearest relatives in the Microsoft Surface Book and Surface Studio range are the newer Microsoft Surface Book 2 13.5-inch (2017). It is the earliest 13.5-inch model of the range that we list.
Questions
Can the SSD or memory in the Microsoft Surface Book be upgraded?
The SSD can be replaced with a larger M.2 drive. Memory is soldered and cannot be upgraded.
My Microsoft Surface Book will not turn on. Is my data lost?
Usually not. The drive is separate from the fault in most cases, and we can remove it and copy your files even if the machine itself is not worth repairing.
How do I get my Microsoft Surface Book to you?
Bring it to our workshop at Unit 1 The Willows, 80 Willow Walk, London SE1 5SY, or call 020 7237 6805 to ask about courier collection. We confirm the price before any work starts.
How much does a Microsoft Surface Book screen replacement cost?
Price confirmed before work starts. The exact figure depends on the part your machine needs, and we confirm it before any work starts.
