Keys that do not register, keys that repeat, and keyboards that have had a drink spilled into them are all repaired by replacing the keyboard. How big a job that is depends on how the laptop is built.
How keyboards are fitted
- On ThinkPads and many business laptops the keyboard is a separate part, replaced without disturbing much else.
- On most thin laptops it is riveted or welded into the palm rest. We replace the keyboard alone where that is practical and the palm rest assembly where it is not.
- On MacBooks it is part of the top case, which is replaced along with the battery.
Trackpads
A trackpad that has stopped clicking, or has risen above the palm rest, often has a swollen battery underneath it. We check the battery before ordering a trackpad. Erratic pointer movement can also be a damaged cable or liquid under the surface.
A single missing key
A keycap that has come off can often be refitted, or replaced on its own if the clip beneath it has broken. It does not always mean a new keyboard.
