We repair the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 at our workshop in Bermondsey, from cracked screens and worn batteries to board faults and data recovery. It is a 12-inch tablet PC from 2014, identified by model number 1631. The SSD can be replaced but the memory is soldered, so storage is the only upgrade.

Microsoft Surface Pro 3 repairs and upgrades
Touchscreen replacement
Glass, touch layer and display are one bonded 12-inch part. We replace it as a unit and test touch and pen input before it leaves.

SSD and storage upgrade
The Microsoft Surface Pro 3 takes an M.2 SSD. We clone the existing drive to a larger one so Windows, programs and files carry over unchanged.

Memory
Memory in the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 is soldered and cannot be upgraded. It is worth knowing this before paying anyone for a memory upgrade.
Windows repair and reinstall
This model does not meet Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements, and Windows 10 reached end of support in October 2025. We can advise on the realistic options, including a lightweight Linux or ChromeOS Flex installation.
Battery replacement
The battery is glued in behind the display. Replacing it means opening the device, which we explain and price before starting. A battery of this age that swells should be replaced before it damages the trackpad or casing.

Keyboard and trackpad repair
The detachable keyboard cover is a separate accessory. We test whether a typing fault is the cover or the connector on the tablet.
Charging port and power repair
Charging faults are traced to the adapter, the Surface Connect port or the charging circuit. The port is a separate part on most models.
We also carry out motherboard repair, liquid damage repair, overheating and fan repair, hinge and casing repair, virus removal on the Microsoft Surface Pro 3, along with USB, HDMI and audio port repair, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth card replacement, webcam and speaker faults, BIOS password removal with proof of ownership and data transfer to a new machine.
Known issues with the Surface Pro range
- From the Surface Pro 7+ onward the SSD sits behind a small door under the kickstand and can be swapped; earlier models have soldered storage.
- Battery swelling that lifts the screen away from the frame should be dealt with promptly.
- Every Surface Pro is opened by removing the glued-on display, which carries a real risk of cracking the glass. We quote with that in mind.
Data recovery from the Microsoft Surface Pro 3
The SSD in the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 can be removed and imaged on our own equipment, so files can usually be recovered even when the machine will not start.

Where the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 sits in the range
Its nearest relatives in the Microsoft Surface Pro range are the newer Microsoft Surface Pro 12-inch (2025). Storage differs too: M.2 SSD, replaceable on the Microsoft Surface Pro 3, soldered to the board on the Microsoft Surface Pro 12-inch. It is the earliest 12-inch model of the range that we list.
Questions
Can the SSD or memory in the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 be upgraded?
The SSD can be replaced with a larger M.2 drive. Memory is soldered and cannot be upgraded.
My Microsoft Surface Pro 3 will not turn on. Is my data lost?
Usually not. The drive is separate from the fault in most cases, and we can remove it and copy your files even if the machine itself is not worth repairing.
Is a 2014 Microsoft Surface Pro 3 still worth repairing?
It depends on the fault. A battery, SSD or charging socket is usually worth doing. A major board repair on an older machine may cost more than the machine is worth, and if that is the case we will say so.
Where do I find the model number on my tablet PC?
The four-digit model number is printed under the kickstand on a Surface Pro or on the base of a Surface Laptop. For this model, look for 1631.
