This page sets out the repairs, upgrades and data recovery we carry out on the ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501, with notes on what tends to go wrong and what can and cannot be upgraded. It is a 15.6-inch gaming laptop from 2017. Both the drive and, on most configurations, the memory can be upgraded, which makes it a good candidate for a refresh.

ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501 repairs and upgrades
Screen replacement
We replace the 15.6-inch panel with one that matches the original resolution and refresh rate. A cheaper 60Hz panel will physically fit many gaming laptops, and we do not fit one unless you ask for it.

Windows repair and reinstall
Windows 11 support depends on the processor: versions with an 8th-generation Intel Core or Ryzen 2000-series chip or newer qualify, and earlier ones do not. We check yours and advise.
Battery replacement
The battery is internal and held by screws. We fit a new one, then calibrate and test it under load. On a 2017 machine a worn battery is the likely cause of short runtime, and we measure its capacity before recommending anything else.

Charging port and power repair
Depending on the configuration this charges through a round socket, USB-C or both. We test the adapter, the port and the charging circuit to find which has failed.
Overheating and fan repair
A thermal service covers fresh compound on the processor and graphics chip, new thermal pads where needed and both fans cleaned. It is the usual cure for throttling and loud fans under load.
SSD and storage upgrade
The ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501 takes an M.2 SSD. We clone the existing drive to a larger one so Windows, programs and files carry over unchanged.

Memory upgrade
On most configurations of the ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501, part of the memory is soldered and there is one free slot, so it can be increased but not replaced entirely.
Graphics repair
The graphics chip is soldered to the board. Artefacts, crashes under load and a black screen with the fans running are diagnosed to the chip, its memory or its power stage, and repaired at board level where it is economical.
We also carry out keyboard and trackpad repair, motherboard repair, liquid damage repair, hinge and casing repair, virus removal on the ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501, along with USB, HDMI and audio port repair, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth card replacement, webcam and speaker faults, BIOS password removal with proof of ownership and data transfer to a new machine.
Notes from the workshop
- The graphics chip is soldered, so graphics faults are board-level repairs.
- Many ROG laptops from 2020 onward use liquid metal on the processor. A thermal service on these needs the right materials and barriers, or it does more harm than good.
- The Zephyrus G14 and G15 have one soldered memory module and one slot on most generations.
Data recovery from the ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501
The SSD in the ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501 can be removed and imaged on our own equipment, so files can usually be recovered even when the machine will not start.

Where the ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501 sits in the range
Its nearest relatives in the ASUS ROG Zephyrus and Flow range are the newer ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15 GA502 (2020). It is the earliest 15.6-inch model of the range that we list.
Questions
Can the SSD or memory in the ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501 be upgraded?
The SSD can be replaced with a larger M.2 drive. Part of the memory is soldered, with one slot free on most configurations.
My ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501 will not turn on. Is my data lost?
Usually not. The drive is separate from the fault in most cases, and we can remove it and copy your files even if the machine itself is not worth repairing.
How do I get my ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501 to you?
Bring it to our workshop at Unit 1 The Willows, 80 Willow Walk, London SE1 5SY, or call 020 7237 6805 to ask about courier collection. We confirm the price before any work starts.
Why does my ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501 overheat or slow down in games?
Usually dust in the heatsinks and thermal compound that has dried out. A thermal service fixes it in most cases. If temperatures are normal and it still slows down, we test the graphics chip and power delivery.
