A laptop that lasts an hour, shuts down at 30 per cent or only works on the charger usually needs a battery. We measure the battery’s remaining capacity and check the charging circuit first, because a new battery will not fix a charging fault.
Swollen batteries
If the trackpad has lifted, the base no longer sits flat or the case has started to split, the battery has probably swollen. Stop charging the laptop, do not press on the bulge and bring it in. A swollen battery can damage the trackpad, keyboard and chassis, and it is a fire risk.
How batteries are fitted
- Older laptops have a clip-in battery that is changed in seconds.
- Most laptops since about 2014 have an internal battery held by screws.
- MacBooks, Surface devices and some ultrabooks have glued batteries, which are released with adhesive remover and never levered out.

How do I know if my laptop battery needs replacing?
Windows and macOS both report battery health, and a battery well below its original capacity, or one that causes sudden shutdowns, is due for replacement. We can measure it for you.
Can I keep using a laptop with a swollen battery?
No. Stop charging it and have the battery replaced. Swelling gets worse and can damage the laptop.
