What goes wrong with Western Digital drives
- My Passport and many Elements portable drives have the USB socket built into the drive’s own circuit board, with no SATA connector, and My Passport and My Book models encrypt the data in hardware even when no password is set. The original board and its chip are part of the recovery.
- WD Red drives with model numbers ending EFAX in 2TB to 6TB sizes use shingled recording, which copes badly with RAID rebuilds and has caused many NAS arrays to drop drives.
- A common WD fault makes the drive respond extremely slowly while still being detected. It is a firmware problem, and continued use makes it worse.
- My Book Live network drives were wiped remotely in an attack in June 2021. If yours was affected and has not been used since, data can often still be recovered.
What it costs
From £99 + VAT. The price depends on what has gone wrong far more than on how much data there is. Use the data recovery calculator for an estimate. The initial consultation is free, and the price is confirmed before recovery starts.
Questions
Can you recover a Western Digital drive that is no longer detected?
Often, yes. A drive that is not detected usually has an electronic or firmware fault, and the data behind it is intact. We confirm what is recoverable, and the price, before recovery starts.
Does the Western Digital warranty cover data recovery?
Usually not. Most warranties replace the drive without recovering what was on it, and the faulty drive is not returned. Some drives are sold with a data recovery plan, so check yours. Either way, recover the data before sending a drive back.
How do I get it to you?
Bring it to Unit 1 The Willows, 80 Willow Walk, London SE1 5SY, or call 020 7237 6805 to arrange courier collection.
