What goes wrong with Synology drives
- Synology volumes are built from Linux software RAID and LVM, with an ext4 or Btrfs file system on top. Windows cannot read the drives, and offering to initialise them is the most damaging thing it can do.
- DS415+, DS1515+, DS1815+ and other units from 2014 to 2016 built on Intel’s Atom C2000 processor can die suddenly from a known chip fault. The drives are normally unaffected and the data intact.
- Do not reinstall DSM, remove a volume or run a repair with a replacement drive until the data has been copied off. A rebuild on drives that are already failing is how many arrays are lost.

Can you recover a Synology drive that is no longer detected?
Often, yes. A drive that is not detected usually has an electronic or firmware fault, and the data behind it is intact. We confirm what is recoverable, and the price, before recovery starts.
Does the Synology warranty cover data recovery?
Usually not. Most warranties replace the drive without recovering what was on it, and the faulty drive is not returned. Some drives are sold with a data recovery plan, so check yours. Either way, recover the data before sending a drive back.
