What goes wrong with QNAP drives
- QNAP units have been repeatedly targeted by ransomware, including Qlocker in 2021 and DeadBolt in 2022. Where snapshots were enabled, or the attack was interrupted, data can often be recovered without paying.
- QNAP storage is layered: Linux RAID, then a storage pool, then thick or thin volumes. Pulling the drives and connecting them to a PC will not show your files.
- Do not reinitialise the NAS or run a file system check from the QNAP menus on a volume that has gone missing.

Can you recover a QNAP drive that is no longer detected?
Often, yes. A drive that is not detected usually has an electronic or firmware fault, and the data behind it is intact. We confirm what is recoverable, and the price, before recovery starts.
Does the QNAP warranty cover data recovery?
Usually not. Most warranties replace the drive without recovering what was on it, and the faulty drive is not returned. Some drives are sold with a data recovery plan, so check yours. Either way, recover the data before sending a drive back.
