What goes wrong with HGST and Hitachi drives
- Hitachi’s drive business became HGST and was bought by Western Digital; later Ultrastar drives carry WD branding but are the same design family.
- Helium-filled Ultrastar drives are sealed and cannot be opened and closed like an air-filled drive, which changes how a mechanical recovery is done.
- Travelstar laptop drives were fitted in many MacBook Pro and business laptops of 2012 to 2015.

Questions
Can you recover a HGST drive that is no longer detected?
Often, yes. A drive that is not detected usually has an electronic or firmware fault, and the data behind it is intact. We confirm what is recoverable, and the price, before recovery starts.
Does the HGST warranty cover data recovery?
Usually not. Most warranties replace the drive without recovering what was on it, and the faulty drive is not returned. Some drives are sold with a data recovery plan, so check yours. Either way, recover the data before sending a drive back.
